General Music
The general music classes are the backbone of our music program. Your
elementary child will meet once weekly for a music instruction time. Grades 7 and 8 meet
once a week for a music instruction time. We cover what each believer
needs to know as a consumer and worship music participant.
Instrumental Programs
Private Lessons
Private 30-minute lessons are offered on piano, voice, and standard orchestra
or band instruments to interested students for grades 1-12. (Private lessons
for band instruments are not encouraged before 5th grade because of maturation
issues.) Lessons are $15 and are charged to your school bill. You may
sign up your child for private lessons through the school office. Specific
lesson times are arranged with each teacher in light of their free times
or the proficiencies and deficits of each individual student. As much
as possible they are scheduled during recesses and seat work times or
during times the classroom teacher recommends. Adjustments are sometimes
made as the year progresses if any sign of academic problems surface.
More advanced students can opt for a 45- minute lesson ($19) as time permits. One repertoire, a ministry opportunity, and a recital time are planned
for each student. Competitions are, of course, encouraged.
Band Program
Beginning "Band"
Group lessons are offered in 5th grade free of charge by like instrument
groups. Two separate 30-minute periods are reserved in the first semester
for woodwinds and brass/percussion players. The goal is to combine this
group into a "band" after the holiday break. This group will then meet
for a 40-minute period. Interested 5th graders can sign up with Elaine Harbin for additional information.
Intermediate Band
This group of 6th-8th graders meets twice a week for a regularly scheduled
period. Sixty minutes of outside practice is required weekly. Interested
students should contact Elaine Harbin or sign up using the course selections
form in the Spring.
Senior High Band
This group of 9th-12th graders meets twice a week for a regularly scheduled
period. Sixty minutes of outside practice is required weekly. Interested
students should contact Elaine Harbin or sign up using the course selections
form in the Spring.
Bell Programs
Three bell choirs currently exist at CBS under the supervision of Elaine Harbin. Each bell choir has loosely followed grade delineation with
the inclusion of a beginning bell choir. Rehearsals are held biweekly.
Auditions and sign-ups are held in the Spring.
Choral Program
Students sing in a choir setting beginning in elementary on a weekly basis.
Choir is voluntary in grades 7, 8 and 9 as these young ladies and men go through
an important transitional period vocally. In grades 10-12 choir is by audition
and voluntary. Special ensembles, most notably the Proclaimers, are organized
under the supervision of Elaine Harbin. Auditions and sign-ups are held
in the Spring.
